This photo shows the Los Angeles County Courthouse from the corner of what is now W Temple St. and N Broadway. You see horse-drawn carriages on the left and people walking along the sidewalk on the right of this image. The stone work looks like it could have been laser aligned.
“The Court House was built from 1887-1891. It was damaged in the 1933 Long Beach earthquake, and declared unsafe for occupancy. Demolition started in 1935 (roof and two upper floors removed), and concluded 1936.” – Los Angeles Water and Power Associates
It is a beautiful sample of the rich history of Los Angeles photography. It is unknown who took this photo but the photographer could have used a Kodak. The Kodak was first offered for sale in 1888 and was a simple box camera with a fixed focus lens. The other likely possibility is a plate camera that offered high quality prints and was very popular well into the 1900’s. Surely this wonderful photographer is no longer available for your photo but I am and look forward to hearing from you.
